Dear Oscar, your write-up on Carnival is excellent. Lot of history and explanation. Truly, it must have been great merriment in simple ways in the past compared to revelry we see today - commercialized to the hilt. True, the Soul of Carnaval of old has vanished into thin air.

But some consolation that in the mindset of the India of today the Carnival festivities are still permitted in amchem Goem.

Thank you, Oscar. I feel nostalgia of the Carnaval we used to celebrate - beginning with a visit to Serra behind the Church to collect lime for cocotes, the fabrication of these projectiles, their storage at strategic locations along the warpath, the street fights between the interlopers of S. Tome, Campal etc into our Fontainhas territory. Rua de Ourém was littered with the debris of many a hard fought battle. One side celebrated victory, the other was left to lick its wounds and get ready for the next day, when the fortunes would be reversed. At the end of each of the 3 days everyone one had a roaring mighty fun.
Times change. THANK YOU for this historical of the quaint event that fills our lives with everlasting memories.
