Thank you, António, for your generous comments. You’re right; Konkani has weathered many storms. Unfortunately, now the dissensions (script, etc.) are strictly… entre nous! When they will end is anyone’s guess.

Thank you, Xavier. How can one ever forget Xennoi Goembab? As a postscript to my translation of the eleven-part article titled “Konkani is not a dialect of Marathi”, I plan to write about the Konkani-Marathi controversy after Dalgado. That is when Xennoi Goembab will figure prominently.

Óscar, your erudition on a variety of subjects, your prolific contributions in Portuguese, English as well as Konkani on the multiplicity of topics I have had the good fortune of reading regularly, are, to put it mildly, most impressive. This one is no different, with so much detail on the ebb and flow of the fortunes of our mother tongue during the past 3.5 Centuries, all duly referenced and documented, the reading of which gave me both despair and hope. Despair because of so many gratuitous assault on its very existence from both occupiers and locals all along this period ; hope, because it shows the resilience of our mother tongue to survive centuries of onslaught and thrive in spite of it all, including the ill will in our times from people who are afraid that its presence is an undeniable proclamation of the personality of our Land - Goa - which they want to erase. Thank You.

Good, reasoned, article, Oscar. You have kept aside polemics to deliver a studied article. I was surprised though, that one of the greatest savants of Konkani, Varde Vaman Valaulikar better known as Xennoi Goembab was not mentioned, even in passing. Thanks for elucidating me about the good work of Fernando Leal, Palha and Cristovao Pinto. I also was unaware of the negative stand of Bhandarkar. As a result, he came down a notch or two in my estimation! Thank you.
