Dear Chris, you’re right, but in our times of moral relativism, who will bell the cat? Three decades ago there was a hue and cry about commercialisation of Carnival celebrations, and rightly so, and now hardly a whimper against bigger evils. A sign of the times!

Archival evidence says Goa’s former capital Old Goa was a den of vice in the 17th century, with gambling, bordellos and wanton carnaval celebrations that spanned months. Despite supernatural warnings(the apparition at the hill on the cross etc), letters of complaint shot off by St. Francis Xavier to Portugal, nothing was done. Old Goa was struck by the plague, its population decimated. The clergy and Catholics have a moral obligation to oppose this ticking time bomb in the last stretch of the Mhadei, Sacred Mandovi.
